Press Release May 1, 2009:

Alvin F Anderson Jr has been accepted into the Public Health Informatics Fellowship
Program (PHIFP) as a Public Health Informatics Fellow with the Center for Desease Control
& Prevention (CDC). Informatics is the application of computer and information science to
help solve public health problems.

The PHIFP is a 2-year paid fellowship in public health informatics. The position, which
also includes hands-on training, allows Fellows to work on real-world problems. Mr.
Anderson will get the opportunity to:
• learn about informatics and public health from subject matter experts
•  work with teams involved in research and development of public health information   
systems
•   lead informatics projects
•   design, develop, implement, evaluate, and manage public health information systems

Alvin is the first African-American to become a Public Health Informatics Fellow with the
CDC. Out of 200 applicants, he was eventually ranked the top candidate of the 16 finalist.
There were five Fellows selected for the 2009-2011 class. Among Mr. Anderson’s other
accomplishments are earning a Masters in Information Technology, an MBA, as well as
the Project Management Professional (PMP), Six Sigma Black Belt, and Health Level
Seven (HL7) certifications.
